my two oscars have developed this cloudy film over their eyes and their eyes are poping out of their head. we also have a parrot fish in with them and he seems to be fine. the oscars have just gotten over ick. ammonia levels are .50ppm-1.0. ph is 7.2 nitrates are 5.0ppm. we have been doing a 25%water change just about every day because of the ick. and we were having problems with the ammonia. but that is under control now. i have never delt with this and don't know what to do. any help?!? :-(

maracyn is good for popeye. popeye kinda looks like a blister over the eye. salt is also good to add when treating illnesses. if you use carbon in your filter you do want to remove it. carbon will remove the meds from the water. after treatment, use the carbon to remove the meds that are in the water and are not needed. depending on how bad the popeye is, the fish could lose their eye to it.

we had removed teh carbon when we treated for ick. I have done a 25% water change every day and was wondering if i should do more than that, maybe an almost complete change. i have also been using kanacyn? we have done two treatments.

Hi and welcome pf, sorry to hear about your problems :(

Popeye and cloudy eye are usually down to environmental problems - regular partial water changes, filter maintenance, tank etc.

I'm not familiar with the medication your using but if it says it helps for these problems then finish the course.

If you've done several 25% changes then you will have allready changed a large overall % of the water and so personally wouldn't o anthing larger than this - remember each water change will also be diluting the medication you've added.

As sf says salt can be effective, though I tend to favour Melafix - only because its been effective for me

Good luck and keep us up to date

update,
here is what we did and so far it seems to be working. we have two tanks, the 15 which there was two small oscars and one parrot fish and a alge eater. then we have a 55gallong tank which had some mickey mouses and a few other platies. basically what i did was switch tanks and clean the small tank really good and then put the fish that were in the big tank in the small tank and the oscars and parrot fish and alge eater in the big tank. and the water that was in the big tank was put into the small tank. and put fresh water in the big tank. and so far one of the oscars eyes look normal and the one that look the worse looks better. my husband and i are going to get some of that melafix and give that a try if this happens again. thanks again for all the help

how big are the oscars? usually you want to keep the hospital tank as small as possible to cut down on the amount of meds that you have to apply. it can get very costly. meds are usually dosed per the gallons of water. i think it was a good idea that the oscars are in a bigger tank, but you may have wanted to wait til after the meds took effect and cured the fish.

you may also want to keep the lights off in the tank. the lights and you looking in on your patients can add to the stress of the fish. i keep my hospital tank in my bedrrom where the lgihts are off during the day and it is dark anyways. no one going in and looking at the fish like in the rest of the tanks.
