Is it possible to clone a Marine tank?
Will using media from a 3ft tank help towards the cycle on a 5ft tank?
I know it can be done on triopical but am curious as to whether it is the same with Marine.
Any help much appreciated,
Angie

I'm not an expert but yes you can seed a "clean" tank with Live rock/sand from an established tank. Not sure on exact figures but you would need a lot more then you would for a FW tank (ie probably around 1/4 live rock to 3/4 base rock). Main reason is that you dont really just want to introduce the bactira but also the hundreds of little critters that have their uses as well.

Someone with actual experience will be able to elborate :)

Thanks Barney. ;)
We can't see any reason as to why we couldn't. We've had success doing it with a tropical tank but not sure how it would be with Marine as the water has to be perfect.

if i understand you can clone and stock a marine in the same few days if you use fully matured live rock and maybe some substrate ... im cloning my marine tank soon since there be no cycle needed if the lr is fully cured.

if live rock is out of the water for more than an hour then it becomes uncured.

Thanks for the replies.
We have about 25 kilos of LR in our 3ft tank at the moment and it will be transferred straight over to the 5ft one. We also have a Fluval 305 which we will use for the new tank as well as the new filter that it comes with it.
I'm a little concerned that there won't be enough bacteria to cycle the tank straight away.

Well if you put all 25kg of the rock into the new tank and move all the livestock into the new tank and don't add more straightaway you'll be fine :D

Thanks so much Ski. :good:
That is great news for us because we've been scratching our heads as to where the 3ft tank can go...
We brought the 5ft tank today and it looks as though we'll be setting it up at the weekend, can't wait!!!
