I have got 4 fancy goldfish in a 5 gal tank, 2 of them are not fancy so are going in pond when it gets warmer. However, the tank does really need a good clean out.

Havent had cold water for about 10 years only tropical so what is best way of cleaning these out without killing them off? Suggestions please or you are quite welcome to come and demonstrate!

Where do you live? Only joking

A lot of fish in a small tank, i think your best bet is to just put the fish into a bucket thats half filled with both tank and fresh water and empty the tank and rinse out the gravel. Once thats settled down and the right temperature add the fish back in. The filter will need to be cleaned in the water thats left in the bucket. Take the sponges from the filter and then squeeze them out and if the water is filthy then get a bucket of warm dechlorinated water and squeeze the sponge/s out until the water is clear.

Thats how I would do the first clean and after that three times a week, do 50% water changes using a small gravel vac and do the filter again once a week.

Ultimately though each fantail should have at least 10 gallons each.
