Cleaning Bio Wheel Filter Media?

I have two used Penguin 200 filters, one was used on saltwater one was used on freshwater. As it wasn't my tank, I'd like to give them a real good cleaning before use.

I am going to buy new filter cartridges for them but wanted to just clean the old bio wheel filter media instead of replacing it (its expensive).

So, what would be the best way to clean the biowheel filter media?

I'm not real sure maybe get a scrub brush and scrub it in used tank water but I have stop buying the filter media for mine and use Filter Fiber made by blue ribbon pet products instead and it works great and a LOT cheaper as long as you don't need carbon. If you want to make your own filters PHlawed makes his own and you can do what he does and ask question.
