Hi all

ive been running a ex600 external filter for 2 weeks now and have started to notice some algae build up in the pipes

the filter has been on full power since i setup my fish tank (2x gold fish)

how do i go about cleaning this out of the pipes?

also how do i go about cleaning out the filter? i dont have the instructions anymore. Do i just take the media out and rinse it with some tank water in a bucket? if so, how often do i do this?

Thanks

Hi there, i`m going to assume your tank is cycled.

Right cleaning the pipes..... not an issue its possible but not really worth the hassle as it dosent restrict flow,
Cleaning the media in your filter is dead easy, simply rinse it out in a bucket of tank water, never rince out all the media at one time or you risk washing away all the beneficial bacteria in your filter always worth doing a round of tests for ammonia, & nitrite 12-24 hrs after cleaning your filter just in case you`ve done to good a job cleaning and started a mini cycle......

hope that helps

it does help alot to clean out your filter pipes once in while as it can restrict flow rate making your filter not as efficient, i found the best way of doing this is removing the pipes after disconnecting and making sure no water is in the pipes and then for the spray bar use a small pipe cleaner brush but for the main pipes i get a length of string and tie a weight to either end n drop one end down the pipe then attach a piece of sponge then pull it through again so the sponge cleans the pipe do this while running water through the pipe hope this helps but i only do this when i notice a drop in flow rate
