Clay sculptures

A friend of mine had recently started his 25gallon and wants to make a clay sculpture(s) for it. He asked me, but I have no idea, so I thought I would post.

Are clay sculptures submergable in tanks and what kind of clay, paints, etc are okay?
He has neon tetras in it, if that matters.

i wouldnt have thought so for normal clay because when I use it for regular sculptures, water makes bits flake off but thats before its fired. maybe if you fired it and then put some kind of non-toxic varnish on it, it may be ok.
