Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with freshwater clams ?
Had a wander into pets at home today (didn't buy anything), they had two types of clams , one was flat and brownish and about three inches and oblongish(clam shaped) lol , the other was about an inch ,more rounded , yellowish with brown circles , any replies appreciated.......

Just thought I would check , better safe than sorry , would have been something unusual to put in. They also had long dark greyish brown snails about 3 inches long, no description given , I'm very wary of it.
How are the embers coming along?

Yeah cories are cool , managed to get the last 5 from the shop (£20) , more likely to be trillineatus , not bothered , they are cool , very active , gonna add more when I can.........

Unless you are target feeding them with filter feeding food, these things are currently just being under fed and will slowly starve. Thy need green water or at least turbid flowing water to feed. Thats why you can buy various different brands of invertebrate food for feeding clams at any lfs that sells marine stuff - because clams need to be target fed in aquariums.

You cant judge if they are doing well, because these things die slowly, and live up to a hundred years.

well they have been with me for 4 month now and they have grown about 3mm maybe 4mm and they came out of a still pond which is owned by a farmer in a middle of a wooded area in a field also the water is crystal clear

im not argueing just saying where they come from and the conditions of the pond :good:

Since you say they have grown they must be doing OK then, I somehow skipped the part when you said they were 12mm long, at that size they wont be requiring much food. I would still go out and buy food for them though, could be growing faster in the pond :good:.

ive just checked on them actually a minute ago lol they are doing great but like you said i will be buying some food for them soon just to make sure thew do, do well im going to bring them inside too soon

You may have a particularly hardy species of FW clam which is hardly seen in the aquaria shops minx so many different factors to consider given your source.

happy, well fed calms, bury themselves and don't move. a perambulating clam/clams, indicates problems. your clams may not be doing as well as you think. clams laying on the substrate, are in real trouble.
