Just want to tell people of my clam, its a purple crocea, not a high grade clam, it is about 3-4", got it for 25 bucks. Anyway, its in my 20 gallon tank, weekly water changes, thats it, no dosing anything. Its a very mixed tank, zoas, corallimorphs, leathers, lps, sps. 150 watt mH 14,000k light, its the stock bulb from a sunpod, too white for me but i dont have enough money to get a pheonix or something, but i can bare with it. The clam is perched on a rock, its mantles are 2/3rds up the tank, so 1/3 from the surface of the water. So i would say 4 1/2 inches away from the surface. The bulb is 4" from the surface. So it is aprox 8 1/2" from the bulb. Anyway, i got it from an lfs, it was kept in a top down view tank, mH lights, very high up, probably about 10-20" from water surface. So there has been an increase in light for them when in my tank.
Anyway, as clams look different in different light, different glass/acrylic, different distances. From far away the mantle has a lot of brown on it, it was more brown than purple. Except for the edge which has an electric blue/green from top down view and a electric dark purple looking at it from the glass. Ive had it for a week, fed it 3 times with phyto, and the brown is starting to go away and be replaced with a nice purple. There still is brown at some places, but definately more purple now.
So, if you have purple/super colors (not brown), light loving clams (mainly crocea and maxima) then put em up high, direct mH light, and there color should be even better. And keep them on the rocks, they arent found on the sand in the wild, so keep your clams off your sand lol.
