my tank does not have a hood at the moment and my dad is in the process of making one for me, but i was wondering if i could just clamp a light onto the side of the tank, with a 15watt bulb, for a temporary light source?
would the clamp hurt the aquarium's glass? or could i just put some foam or cloth between the clamps and the glass...
this idea just popped into my head and sounded like a good temporary fix to me!

heres a picture of a light similar to the one i have:

I wouldn't think it would do anything to to the glass aslong as you dont keep moving it around! As for the light i would have thought that it would be fine! dont keep it on all day tho!

If you have real plants then i dont no anything about light for them as i have fake plants, but im sure someone on the forum would help you if you do have real plants ;)

nope i have alllll fake plants.
i just figured my tank needed some light. :)
right now ive clamped the lamp to the top drawer of the dresser that my tank is on, its working pretty well.

Clamp lamps are fuuuun. That should be a good source, as long as the water isn't exposed to the bulb it should be fine. But I see you've already found a place to accommodated your lightfixture :)

go for it ! ;)

A friend of mine used a clamp lamp as a light source for his 2 turtles.

It never damaged the glass of the tank in anyway and he has been using this for almost a year.

As you said, just out a piece of cloth between the clamp and the glass if you're really worried about scratching the glass.

If the tank was made of acrylic, i would use the cloth. Acrylic scratch rather easily.

*thinking of doing this on my goldfish tank* - 180litre with live plants. The lights in the hood don't seem to work... one question, would it heat up the water? I'm thinking not because the tank is pretty big... but would appreciate opinions. thanks!
