Cichlids???

i think it helps a lot if you begin with fish that suit your local water, ie if the water is hard and alkaline then choose maybe malawi cichlids, if its soft and acidic then south american cichlids eg angelfish.
find out what your local water parameters are and decide from there what fish you want to have. ask your lfs to help if you haven't got your own test kit.
on a personal note, i have had malawi cichlids for about 6 months and find them the easiest fish to kepp that i have ever owned, it's a big bonus that they are colourful and full of character too!!!!!!!!!!!

I just started two weeks ago and am very happy with the fish and experience so far.

Good color and the fish really do have their own personalities.
Just follow the advise of you LFS and do some research yourself and hopefully everything will work out. Keep reading this forun and ask questions.

The LFS I go to have a good variety of africans and they are pretty knowledgeable on the subject.

Again find out your water parameters, then find the cichlids you like and their requirements if they match then it's easy...if not it's hard work but the water can be adjusted but must be done regularly and monitered more than normal. On the whole i have found cichlids from Malawi, Tanganyika, Central and South America easy to keep. :D Good luck they are great fun.
