Hi all i have heard alot about cichlids and community tanks in regards to there incompatibility however i would like to correct this. So here goes i have a 200 gallon tank in which i have and raise 7 tiger barbs 4 gourami, 2 chinese algae eaters, 1 pleco, 1 weather loach, 4 angels, 1 severum, and 4 moori dolphins (cichlids) they all get along fine i had the angels seperate but then my daughters guppies bred so moved them into the large tank so i could put the guppy fry in smaller tank. Like i say no problems at all the key is not over stocking and choosing the right tank mates. Please give me your thoughts or any questions about any species listed plz post thanks guys and girls.

Only thing I can say is I had a 20gallon tropical community and I added 4 Kribs, 1M/3F,,, it worked ok but they kind of took over when the Kribs started courting, the Kribs gave my Corries a bit of a nip now and again but no real problems, I even had shrimo in there and they were fine to :good:
I suppose with certain types of cichlids it would work, i.e. south american etc but I wouldn't put Tanganyikan or some of the Malawi in with them

I agree but like i say there is peaceful members of the cichlid family and the dolphins are a peaceful bunch never had an issue yet. Oh i used to have 8 tiger barbs but 1 got sick and that got swallowed lol

Any chance you could post a pic. of the dolphins, sure I have seen them at LFS ? I agree to a point as to what you are saying but it would at the end of the day be dependant on tank size, good when it works though :good:

Angelfish and Severums generally do better in soft acidic waters as opposed to the lake malawi cichlids that generally perfer hard alkaline water. Is unclear to me why folks mix species that don't share same water parameter's.
Africans also are more prone to bloat when fed too much meaty foods such as those enjoyed by other species of cichlids and require considerable vegetable matter or algae based foods in addition to other foods.
Nobody tells the Africans that gobbling up too much animal proteins will make them sick.

Like i say i have no problems so far they been together about 2 years i use 20% Ro and the rest tap and a small amount of cichlid salts.

any advice would be great i consder myself advanced but i always like new input..

i think you have also go to remember most people considering putting a cichlid or two into a community tank don't have a 200gal tank... but hey!

I myself am trying the cichlid + community with barbs, dwarf gourami and two Severum in a 240L tank. so far so good!

is that your severum he is gorgeous heres mine....

Due to water parameter preferences, and diet, Rift Valley Cichlids are best kept in by themselves.
