hi
i have a 6x2x2 tank set up with a large pond pump and filter housing koi, carp, barbel, rudd, tench, channel cats and chub. well everything has been fine until i returned today to find 1 of my chub finding it difficult to swim down, the rear of the fish from dorsal to tail seems buoyant stopping the fish from swimming normally, i did a water change on sunday and fed yesterday, the tank is mature and been running in its current state for 18 months,
any idea? i can try and video the fish if that would help?

cheers, chris

the tanks to small for the fish. how many do you have of each? the catfish, carp and koi should get to about 2-3 foot so to big to turn round in the tank. the barble, chub and tench should get to about 1 foot. thjey will all need to go into a pond about 8x6x6 foot. the only thing that can stay in the tank for life is the rudd. with the chub it sounds like swim bladder im not to sure how to treat it but i think you can get meds for it and waterchanges should help aswell.

please dont think im being rude but im aware of how big the fish will grow, as and when they out grow there surroundings they will be transferred to a suitable pond and replaced with smaller ones, what i should have mentioned is none of the fish are over 6" with the majority around 4 and the cats about 2.5, also growth rates cant be managed to some degree by diet, feeding 2-3 times a week on low protein foods will slow growth without stunting! and again the pond filter which is a laguna 12000 and 4500l pump maintain a good level of water quality,

as for swim bladder? im not sure at present and like i said the water was changed 3 days ago!!!

cheers, chris

how many of each do you have?
tbh 4500lph isnt that good filteration. you want atleast a 10x turn over with fish as messy as you have. that means you want a filter doing about 6800lph.
what are your amonnia nitrate and nitrates?
small daily waterchanges should help. is there anywhere else you can put the ill fish?

10x per hour? just out of interest, where did you get those figures? its getting a turn over of around 7x per hour which in my experience is more than enough, couple that with a filter rated at 20x the tank capacity, and feeding a low protein diet mean im not worried about the tank being under filtered, my nitrites and ammonia are both at 0 and have been for some time and with that being the case i question what small water changes would achieve?? surely small water changes would be needed if the water parameters were in question?

just noticed your in thetford, im guessing thats thetford UK?

cheers, chris

thats just the turn over most people recommend and ive always fornd it a good amount eenought to keep amonia and bits down but not to high for the fish. fair enough if your ammonia and bits are 0 then there cant be a problem with filteration.
yh i live in thetford england. why?

just looked at your profile and saw thetford, i live near newmarket so know thetford reasonably well, would i be right in guessing you use swallw at east harling??

cheers, chris

oh and the fish is swimming allot better today, i have a suspicion it was bunged up if you know what i mean, more veg in the diet should help me thinks!!

yh i do use swollow for some fish but its quite expensive. i go to tut hill in bury aswell good prices there and they have a good selection. i like the fishing lakes up at east harling aswell some nice fish there. good about the fish :]

i didn't know there were fishing lakes there, where abouts? i know swallow can be expensive but there cold water selection is very good, there the only place locally i have found that stock barbel, chub and trout! i've used tut hill but found the quality hit and miss!, have you tried amwell aquatics in soham?

all my tanks are tropical but i know what you mean theres loads of diffrent goldfish and pond fish. i like the golden tench up there.. ive always found tut hill good never had a fish from there die or evan seen a dieing one. ive never been there is it any good? im not to good with directions and only know how to get to it from thetford. if you go up that road towards diss from thetford the road splits into 2 and if you go to the left towards harling theres a sign just infront of a field that says fishing lakes or somethink like that and just follow the signs. theres nothink big there there is some 30lb carp but rearly cought the average is about 5-15lb and theres some nice 8lb tench and a 5lb perch in there. theres apparently some crusion (sp) carp in the horeshoe lake aswell.

amwells good, more dry goods than swallow but less fish, although there are some very good fish there! do you know the name of the lake? and is it day ticket?

cheers, chris

nah i cant think of a lake around there?
how old are you? if your under 16 its £2,50 for 1 rod and £3 for 2 rods and if your oveer 16 its double that.

out of curiosity what colour is your Tench?
i think they would be gold because i cant remember seeing green tench at swollow but i might be wrong because like i said i dont really look in the cold water bit that much.
