Hi,

I have just spend a few weeks cleaning my jewel rekord 600 aquarium and equipment. It has been in the shed for a year while our loft conversion was being built and although it got built within a few months I never took it out until a few weeks ago. It is all clean and I am just waiting for a stand I ordered.

What fish should I put in the tank?

I have looked after the tank for about 3 years when I was young but didnt look after it that well and the oldest one of my fish lived was a year. :( Im 14 now and know how to look after it much better but just want to know if any of you experienced fish keepers have any suggestions for my tank.

I would love a shark but my tanks too small and it would eat my other fish :( so im going to have to stick will the smaller ones. I would prefer intresting and colourfull fish as it is going in the dining room so any guests to the house will see it.

Thanks and cannot wait to hear from you!

So your tank is a standard 60 litre.. here's a list of fish I compiled which is suitable for that sized tank: http://aquariumadventure.wordpress.com/species-for-a-60-litre-aquariums/

If you want colour, I would recommend tetras as best choice, potentially doing a South American bio-tope or a tank full of male guppies with an apple snail.. what are the water parameters for the water you plan to use in the aquarium after it has stood for 24 hours?

Thanks for that!

What are water parameters? When I was younger my dad did it all. All I did is feed the fish.

Water parametres are the 'qualities' of the water; pH, hardness, those kinds of things.

What you need to do is stand a cup or jar of water for a day (as the chlorine and other things can affect the pH, so you ned them to disappear) and then test it for pH, hardness and nitrates; it might be good idea to tes for ammonia too; we do have people who have low level ammonia from their tap water.

That will help people recommend the best fish for your particular water :good:

Knowing the water ammonia and nitrite readings is quite important, especially if you plan to use tap water (which is what most of us do), because I have seen both as high as 2 ppm for some people.

Another important factor is the decor you plan to use; my personal preference is heavily planted as it allows for a larger number of fish and makes the fish feel more comfortable.

Also, do keep in mind that some species need to be kept in groups of 6+, while other species can only be kept individually. The list I gave is just what I said it was: a list of species which fit into a 60 litre tank, it does not cover compatibility or numbers of each species in any way.
