I'm new at this and know enough to know that chlorine is bad and also in my water system. When starting up my 55 gallon tank I added per directions Aquasafe by tetraAqua. Ok when I do part of a water change do I add enough of the treatment to treat the entire 55 gallons or just enough to match the water change? I had all my fish, except 2, to die off in a weeks time period. Maybe its to much chlorine in the water. My water checked out fine but have no way of checking chlorine. The town I live in has just started to add chlorine to the water system in the last six months or so and at times I can smell it really bad. Maybe they havn't got the equiment set up just right yet? Thanks in advance :)

You only add enough for the water your changing...to my knowledge.
Is your tank cycled? If not, that pretty much explains the fish deaths
It might not be just your city, from time to time I can smell mine a lot as well.

Ok here is the easy answer..

when doing a water change you have to options ( after you remove dirty water from tank )

A - pour tap water in bucket and then pour into tank ( add enough for the bucket )

B - use a hose from the tap to refill the tank ( add enough to treat the entire tank )

there you go...keep it simple !!

I just add enough for the replacement water. Let's say you have a 100 gallon tank, and you do a 10 gallon water change. Your water has 1.0 ppm chlorine (mine averages .62-.78ppm per the latest city water report), you add enough to your giant 10 gallon bucket of tap water to neutrlize 1ppm, & dump it in. Or you dump in your huge bucket & add enough to the tank to take care of 0.1ppm in your 100 gallon tank. It's the same amount of dechlorinator. You don't need to add enough to treat 100 gallons unless you change 100 gallons.

Why would you want to treat water thats allready been treated?

You only treat the water that you are replaceing, and as somebody else has mentioned your fish deaths could be due to the fact that your tank may not be cycled, check the threads here for information on cycling a tank.
