Folks,

I just obtained a used 28 Gallon tank. I got it home and filled it with water to test for leaks. Well it's not leaking, but I did notice a small chip on the exterior side of the glass. It's less than a millimeter deep, but it's about 2 MM wide. The glass is .25 inches thick. It seems fine, but what are the long term implications of this chip? Will it eventually crack? I want to use the tank obviously, but I don't want to risk setting it up if it will eventually break.

Thanks in advance.

whereabouts on th glass is the chip? top bottom, corner? makes some difference. at the top of the tank, shouldn't be a problem, towards the bottom then it may be. You can get chip repair kits form car outlets. These are supposed to stop the chip devloping into a crack.

As FMF says, it depends where the chip is, I bought a new tank when I was 8 and stood it directly on a wooden stand, without padding - the bottom 4 corners all chipped off - 2mm by about 7mm up the glass - Just gave the tank away, and Im 45 !!!!! So they are tougher than you think, but if theres a chance it can run, you HAVE to do something NOW... either patch it, or replace the pane if its gonna pop, you can put money on when its full, and youve just had a new carpet ! LOL I've only ever seen one blow, and its like a bomb went off - there was damage to funiture on the opposite wall.

Photo would help...

Update:
The glass has A LOT of scratches (I hope these won't be too prevalent when filled with water. What's really sad is that my current 20 gallon is flawless, I'm almost hesitant to upgrade). Plus I noticed a chip on the edge of the glass near the bottom of the tank (as in the picture below, in which the tank is turned upside down). I did manage a picture of the original chip, but what I realized is that it's very hard to take a picture of glass. At any rate, I think it will be fine. If anyone has any other advice / anecdotes, they would be much appreciated. The chip in question is located on the side of the tank, about 4 inches from the bottom and 2 inches from the edge.

Looks like its been like that a while, so probably be fine, but to be honest I think I'd bin that one

Its the chips that would keep me awake.... when they go, they GO, its not just a dribble - you risk the whole pane blowing out if a crack runs.
For what tanks cost nowdays, I'd rather sleep at night !

Okay, thanks for your advice.

I second the idea of replacing that tank. Glass is a touchy thing when weakened.
