So I was doing some research on this fish and thought i would like one. i have a 900 gallon pond with 2 koi and 2 goldfish and lots of tiny mosquito fish. Would my pond support it? (it is full of algae and i would feed it sinking pellets) also i read they like to school. could this pond support a small group of these fish?

Provided [a] the water didn't get much colder than 15 C or warmer than 25 C, and water quality was excellent, then yes, the fish should do well. But whether you'd want to keep it is a whole other question. The species is benthic and wouldn't be seen much, if at all, in a typical pond. They come from streams and rivers and need a home with a strong current and lots of oxygen, so that aspect of pond design will be crucial. Yes, they are social and should be kept in groups.

Cheers, Neale

yes it would be in that temperature range. i would have to add a current but that would be easy with the pump i have. also how many should be in a group?

i saw them on saturday and was very interested. i am aware that they "loose their beauty" but i want something that you don't see in an everyday fish pond. also something to help control the algae as my koi eat most snails.

I saw a post on Practical Fish Keepings facebook the other day that they had seen some start to pop up and they were putting out a warning that they are illegal in the UK and you face a hefty fine and the fish will be destroyed if you own them - a few people on the post are suggesting that the authorities get involved so I would avoid them at all costs :/

Do bear in mind strong water currents aren't necessarily appreciate by goldfish, especially fancy goldfish, and will cause serious damage to some plants, particularly lilies.

Groups will need to be 3+ specimens.

Water quality means high oxygen, zero ammonia and nitrite, and low nitrate (ideally <20 mg/l).

Cheers, Neale
