Would it be ok to start a small colony of cherry shrimp in a nano tank of 7 litres...?
When I start to notice that its getting to crowded I will take some out an put them in my 350litre...
Would it mater that there is no lid on the small tank are would I need to get a bit of glass are something for a lid??

I don't think you would need a lid, but I could be wrong! lol

Just in the process of starting a 40L myself (currently fishless cycling).

You should be fine with cherry shrimp in that tank. And you shouldn't need a lid. I have several hundred and haven't had a jumper yet.

Would love a bigger tank myself for cherry shrimp but the electric costs enough running my 350 litre... If I started of with bout 6 how long use think it would take to build up the numbers??
Gonna cut some of my filter sponges up that I have in my external filter to hopefully speed up my cycle in the nano tank....

I've put about 70% mature media in my 40L filter but still cycling on day 27! Don't know where I went wrong!! I would have thought it would have cycled in a lot shorter time than it currently is but there you go, ammonia starting processing quickly from day 1, but nitrites have been a nightmare. I was chatting to a guy who breeds shrimp and he said I could have probably put red cherry shrimp straight in from day one as the bio-load would be minimum and RCS are pretty easy/hardy, but I'm playing it safe.

Good idea cutting up some sponge to put in the nano tank.

Hard to tell how long to build up the numbers. Like with any aquatic life it all depends on the conditions. Mine are doing a little too well. I started out with 6 last May and now I have hundreds. They love the java moss, so maybe that's what keeps them going.

Might put a bit of moss in are a small moss ball... Wouldn't want to put them in from day one either like yourself to be safe...
When they breed I might give some to my local fish shop cause any time I asks for them they can never get them in I have to go to a different store bout a hour away to get them...
The tank that you have hundreds in do you have other fish....

I'm going to start up a shrimp tank soon too :) It will be my first iwagumi :yahoo:

Don't forget to start a thread when you get it going!

I set up my rcs tank yesturday. I seeded a basic sponge filter and my gravel in an old goldfish starter bowl using bio max and gravel from my community tank. Took about 14 days. It's 28 ltr I've put two moss balls and some small java fern in there. The shrimp are very active and are all over the tank. I've started with ten. Hopefully will see more soon.

Nice. I think I've over-killed a bit on the fishless cycle but never mind in the final stages of it know (hopefully) and at least I know I shouldn't get any issues with the water quality (again hopefully!).
