I saw tewo dull colored "females" displaying at the LFS but I thought only males do that? How do you tell the difference between a dull colored male and a female? There was one bright red cherry in there who I assume is the dominant male? Help?! So confused.

:dunno:

But I am interested in this as well. Cherry barbs are on my list. :rolleyes:

They are on mine as well. I think I am going to get bright red male tomorrow. Just need to know how to pick out a female! :)

Males are cherry or pink coloured like this;

Females are brown like this;

Ideall you should have 2-3females per male, as they are shoaling fish you should keep them in a minimum size group of 5-6. They definitely do best in planted tanks, so make sure you have the righy habitat for them. They're very peaceful fish by nature but kept in numbers too low or in the wrong environment etc they may show abnormal behaviour like aggression.
