Guys, I just found a mini pot and the most perfect matching rocks for my tank! I'm going to make caves so I can really have my GSP happy.. Look at these freakin rocks.. Would I just boil these to make them suitable for the tank? What else would I need to do?

Pour vinegar on the rocks. If it fizzes don't put them in your tank, they will alter the water chemistry.

Shouldn't you boil them and not put vinegar on them?

godricpuffer, I think you misunderstood.

Pour a drop or two of vinegar on the rocks, this makes sure the rocks are safe. If theres any sort of reaction (fizzing) then don't put them in your tank because they will throw your water chemistry off.
Make sure the pot is glazed. If its not then it could have soaked up some bad stuff. Once the vinegar is done then just boil them. Some people use a bleach/water mixture, but you have to be careful with this method.

I would recomend NOT using that pot. It looks like it has been used for something before and may have absorbed chemicals for the soil or fertalizer. Pick up a brand new pot from the hardware store, they only cost around $1

Alright thanks. How about soaking it in water for 3 weeks?

I wouldn't risk it, new ones are cheap. If you want to match it to the substrata you can coat it with silicone and then roll it in dry gravel (same as you use in the tank) to coat it....blends in with the rest of the tank nicely.

That's a really good idea.. Where would I get silicone like this?

OK I bought a new terocada pot, but I don't the clay to bleed into the water, thus making the brown. Could I coat it with Lacker and then boil it?

Terracotta wont bleed into your water.

There is no reason to laquer it

There is no reason to boil it if it has not been exposed to an undesirable pathogens

If you laquer boiling would be of no use anyways because any pathogens would be trapped beneath the laquer

I sure hope your not planning on keeping these two together for long.

What two together? My fish? no no no, they won't be together.

Believe it or not, up here you can buy aquarium safe silicone adhesive/glue at the hardware stores and chain stores like Home Hardware and Canadian Tire. I love puffers. Good luck with yours!

Hey guys, I got a new, and a bit smaller terokada pot, and I put it in a cup of water to see if the pot would bleed into the water, and it didn't. I'm guessing the other pot was just old. I'll have some pics of the tank up in no time!
