Hi, im just afer some advice. Due to certain happenings my full setup is now in a Vat until I get the new tank up and running. Could I put my cheato in there? It is currently sitting in a bucket with a heat, light and powerhead. I am having a few issues with nitrate atm and hopefully my cheato will help but I havent been using it.

Will it cause any issues?

Cheers
James

From what I know mate you can add it in the display tank amongst everything else but i think its recommended that you keep it contained in a net of some sort as its meant to have a fast grow rate. Also think some of the fish will try to get at it and cuc mainly!

It should be fine, people tend not to have it in the display area as it's ugly as sin.

Try to keep it together and lashed down or it will split and spread.

Yip its fine in the VAT just keep it in a bag as suggested.

If you have nitrate creep (most prob from moving the LR)

I use Purigen as well it all helps :good:

Hi, thanks all for the feedback. I have put it in. I know it doesnt look great but as its just in the Vat I dont mind, its only there to do a job. Hopefully it is going to help and wont split and spread.

Out of interest, I find it hard to read the salifert nitrate test, anyone else have this issue? Can anyone help?

Cheers

Yip I hate the test kits always a struggle I use a diffrent nitrate kit

Hagen Nutrafin Nitrate Liquid Test Kit

still not great but I prefer it

Thanks ill look into it, I just find it hard to actually say "yep its that colour". Are you meant to look down with the liquid of the colours and match or over the white and match to the colours? Hope that makes sense.

What other tests do people use?

Cheers
James

I only got salifert. I find them pretty easy to read. On a par with most test kits.

On the salifert for nitrate you look from the top of the test vial down onto the chart. Put the vial on a blank part of the card and match it with the colours.

If the reading is 10 or below then for a more sensitive reading, you look through the side of the vial and compare and what ever reading you get, you divide it by 10.

How about that aye!............thats from memory!.......I test way, way too much!

Dont need the instructions for any of my salifert tests anymore! ner, ner,ne,ner, ner lol

Only other issue with adding chaeto to a temporary tub that I don't see listed so far is that certain gastropods (and some fish I guess) will eat it at an alarming speed. But, if you don't have cowries or massive, super-hungry Turbos, then the chaeto is likely safe for a while.

Two other ideas for keeping the chaeto contained besides a bag that also keep critters away from it:
- breeder nets or plastic breeder boxes
- the slotted plastic boxes used to sell things like blueberries and little tomatoes.

That is a really good idea :good:
