My pond is finally falling foul of blanket weed. Its starting to cover plants etc. I do have a small UV on the pond but thats not doing anything (although I didn't think it would). What can I get that will get rid of the blanket weed please? I've heard that barley straw doesn't work.

do you do water changes on the pond? if you don't then start doing partial water changes and physically remove the algae.

Yes I do, 15-20% every two weeks. Its in full sun and I feed every 2-3 days. I need something chemical or biological to help me fight it. Any ideas please?

What you have to do is get a strong stick and stir up all the weed and hook it out bit by bit. eventually it will all go.

Tom.

Thanks but not an option as its coating everything in a fine layer. I've got some chemical treatment to see if that works.

no, the best way that i found which seemed to work is getting barley straw (you can get this free of a farm probably) and just tying it into a large, tight bale and chucking it in the water, leaving it there for a while. You may have been told that straw doesn't work but they probably didn't leave it in long enough. You can also buy this at shops but it's much cheaper if you know a farmer or nip down to a farm. It seemed to reduce mine, so try that. It's a better option than chemicals, as it's always best to avoid adding chemicals. Oh, and UV lights are designed to kill algae, which makes your water green, and blanket weed isn't algae so UV won't really kill it. Hope this Helps!
