Right-tee-ho boys & girls...It's challenge time! :hyper:

Challenge is: Lighting needed for a friend of mine with no £££ to spend....

She has:
250L / 66US gallon bow fronted Freshwater (to be planted) tank. The length of her tank end to end, is 47 inches or 1200mm.
Tankcsubstratewater.jpg

This tank was purchased second hand & comes with a woefully inadequate single 20W light.

We need to have lighting suitable to give about 1.5W / gallon (T8 say 100W, T5's say 75W) across it's width.

Hence can you all help with a solution.....: what would be the CHEAPEST way of getting such lighting???

I'll start the ball rolling at £60 for this lot:

QUICK search by me):

Hence 2x 36Watt interpet T5 compact 'Interpet T5 Compact Triplus' tubes. These tubes are designed to promote plant growth.
i.e. 2x £12.80

That's just the tubes, they'll need transformers:
2x High Power T5 Compact Lighting Starter Unit 36W
i.e. 2x £18.80

And 2 reflectors to go with them...

There MUST be a cheaper way of doing this!!!! My fiend cannot justify £60

Thank you all in advance for any help!!! :good:

yep, I saw that on the the poxy website, with a note that a replacement unit was due soon....

Please note that this product is no longer available from the manufacturers, but a replacement unit will become available.

hence another reason for my challenge.

C'mon the Truck, how would you do this???

thinking...i have contacts ;) :shifty:

ive asked them and they told me no replacement unit :( i emailed them a few months ago.

i think T5 would be better on your wallet personally.

^ indeed as I've hinted above  ... you don't need as many watts in comparison to T8 etc... Hence I reckon 75W ish T5's to get an equivalent to 1.5W / Gal.

ignore my first link, i wont edit it or it will bugger the links

remember on a bigger tank not as much light is needed

whats the depth too?

50cm / 20inches ... less 3 inches for substrate... 17inches then.

Anyone better that!!

I could do it for £10 with all new parts :shifty:

4 bayonet sockets - £1 each
4 6400K energy saving lamps - £1 each
1 plug - 95p
1 3A fuse - 5p
2m of 3core 3A wire - £1

Beat that

Seriously, you'be be astonished at the plant growth off energysavers.

Coverglasses are recomended to prevent them getting splashed, but I never bothered with them when I had ES's on my old planted tank...

All the best
Rabbut

EDIT to add, Morrisons have a deal on energy savers ATM. 50p each for 11W 6500K lamps. Thats brought me down to £8...
