I have a large pond, somewhere between 500 and 800 gallons. I stocked it with feeder goldfish previously, along with an old regular plain black placo that i had in my indoor aquarium for a long time. (As a side note, I live in Florida, so it doesn't get cold in the winter.) The placo and the feeder goldfish lived for about 2 years and got very big. Then, some otters came and raided my pond. Ate allmost all of the goldfish. The placo got caught in the filter, and a giant heron finished off the last of my precious fish, except for 1. (All of this in about a week). We were redoing some stuff outside, so we put the goldfish in a small tank incase anything got into the ponds. A racoon fished our last living goldfish out, and ate the poor thing.

Well. We have finally restocked with 23 feeder goldfish and 3 normal placos. They are doing well, but are still amazingly small. And in my pond the placos disappear because of their color. (Can't beat them for algae control though.) Finally, getting to my question, I want to add a channel catfish to my pond. The one I would be getting is about 1 inch long right now. But, I'm a bit worried about the catfish eating the goldfish and placos when they grow up. I've allways had a thing for catfish, but I don't want it to eat my other fish. So basically, I'm asking if
A: A fully grown channel cat would eat fully grown feeder comets (About a foot long, or they will be when the cat is grown) or the placos (Again, about a foot long when the cat will be grown)
B: If there are any alternative typed of catfish which would live in harmony outside year round. It never gets cold, aka below 60F.

EDIT: I was wrong about the size, it was between 500 and 800 gallons, not 1,000 and 1,500. Sorry.

A Channel Catfish will grow faster than your Goldfish will, I think he'll catch up with there size soon and eat them if you were to get one.

Well, that's unfortunate. But does anyone else have any ideas for catfish that would grow fairly large, (around 2 feet should be best) and would live happily in an outdoor pond with plecos and goldfish? Preferably cats that would be easy to come by, and not too expensive.

Thanks, I found a few ideas that may work for me.

I really like the look of that one, but he may end up getting a bit large and be very hard to come by.

Also looks really cool, but it says they are rarely imported.

Mabye a bit small, but having 3 or 4 of those swimming around would really change up the pond some and add some color.

"May eat very small fish" Would mean that I would have to raise any future additions in a seperate tank, but it would be a nice fish to have.

The profile speaks for it's self :hyper: That is one of the biggest fish i've ever seen. Reminds me of an old camp ledgend of a giant catfish. I wonder if someone released one of these...

If anyone has any comments on these fish and which ones might be a sucessful addition to my pond, it would be appreciated.

The problem is that I wouldn't be able to see either of those in my pond. They are far too small.

Some Walmarts are selling Mystus leucophasis as upside down cats - not suitable for a community tank but would be ok in your pond.

How large do those get? And would they terrorise the goldfish and plecos?
