changing the tank water

Weel as a rule of thumb I would suggest 25-30% a week.
Others may say less more frequently or more less frequently but thats a generally accepted value.

I have 4 tanks and i do mine every weekend and change roughly 25% in each - use the waste water for watering the plants in the garden

Hi :) ,

there is no hard and fast rule but I do a 25% water change on all of my tanks once a week.

Obviously, if you encounter a problem of any sort (ich etc.) then you should adjust accordingly to cater for meds and the like.

I was think of doing about 50% every other weekend as i'm busy a lot, also i thought if i did it like that it would be less stress for the fish doing it less often?

Once a week I do a water change and I would change one third of the tank and replenish. The equipment I use is a 2gallon plastic bucket and a plastic kitchen jug. I use plain old ordinary tap water (ph7) and boil a kettle to make it the same temp as the aquarium. You can use your additives at this point (mix in the bucket), eg Stress Coat, Tetra Aquasafe. I only put in Plant fertilizer and Tetra Blackwater Extract though. See thread for pics.
