Two questions about changing the filter media:
1) How long will a filter sponge last? One Month?
2) My filter allows me to "piggy-back" sponges so I can allow bacteria to form on the new sponge before I take the old sponge out. How long should I leave the old sponge in to allow sufficient bacteria to form on the new sponge?

The filter sponge should last a really long time...I think I've heard of people keeping them for over a year. When it starts to fall apart, squeeze it out on the new filter sponge, then cut it in half and keep one half in the filter for about a week to allow the bacteria a chance to catch up and grow to a good population on the new sponge.

When I was running hob filters I had one that was at least 7 years old, and still useable. I had several that were 3-4 years old. AquaClear sponges seem to last forever.

If you ever do find need to change them run in the new one for at least two weeks, longer if possible.

I have a fluval 4plus and apparently the carbon lasts for a month and the white pads last for 4 months according to the instructions.
:good:

The carbon sponge will last between 4 and 6 weeks, the white pad will last untill it falls apart. Carbon is only there to remove chemical impurities in the water. Unless your water goes off-colour, or you are removing meds, you can run your tank without it.
