I'm making plans to change to marine if i have to move to japan. I've been reading lots about marine and realize they take alot of lighting power and i'm trying to figure out what to do about my stock light as this will be the deciding factor. Do i need to get a new overhead or can i use the current one? I have a rio300. I dont' want to get the open aquarium style over head. Does anyone know of a fixture that will fit right on and keep it closed?

Are you looking into a full blown reef? Corals, other inverts, fish algaes? You can buy other starters and add more t5 lights and things under your existing hood and the answer also depends on which corals you want

I do want to get into corals....stilll tons of reading to do on types of coral. Really what i was getting at was the amount of heat, will it be too much heat for my current fixture? I've noticed lots of fixtures are made of aluminum and have fans.

oh right sorry, im not to sure as i just have t8 lights, when you say fixture what do you mean, the starter or the actual hood? As you would need to upgrade the starter for a higher wattage i would assume and the hood would be fine.

have i just missed it totally? lol

the hood is what i'm concerned about...but if i have to upgrade the starter i will have to do the whole fixture since its all sealed. Who makes a good hood that will keep my tank closed top?

If you get a knife and run it down the back bit on the top of the hood it should come off and reveal the starter, you can just take it all out and which ever new starter you get you can put it in there if you want to keep your hood. And if i were you i would put in a few fans just to keep some fresh air flowing and the temp down
