Hi there
Im planning on changing from an undergravel filter to a one that sits inside the tank.
I know this new filter needs time to work but have red somewhere that I can put a little gravel from the tank into the bottom of the new filter to help speed up this process
Is this correct?
If so can I store some of the gravel in a jar with some water from the tank while im setting up the new one?
thank alot
vicky

Since the gravel you talk of adding to the filter is already in the tank, my advise is to just leave the gravel in the bottom of the aquarium. Also, leave the undergravel filter where it is and run the new filter as-is for a month. Then remove the UGF and youre done.

I know a month seems like a long time, but it really takes that long for the beneficial bacteria to grow on the new filter media. Also, this time period may be longer or shorter depending on the size and number of fish you have.

If anyone knows more about this than me, please correct me.

The gravel in a jar wont work, (at least I dont think it would) unless you can feed the bacteria, keep it the same temp as it was in the tank and provide it with oxygen.

Just the leave UGF in the tank like said above and thins should be fine.
