Currently on a juwel vision 180 I am running the juwel internal filter and and eheim ecco 2234 filter. I'm toying with getting rid of the juwel filter and putting in another external (was going to be another eheim). Theres a couple of threads mentioning tetratec externals. They appear to force the water from the bottom up through the filter media (which the eheim doesn't do). I've had the eheim about 3 years and had no problem with it and very quiet.

If the tetratec do you think its worth going for the 1200, or will this be way over the top for my tank? THe price diff between the 700 and 1200 is about £10, the 700 is rated 100-250 litres and the 1200 is rated 500 litres. I'm always sceptical about the ratings though! Tank is tropical, and has 12 platies and 8
6 cories and 5 apple snails. No live plants (5 snails make short work - I can't keep up wih the food they need!)

Don't have probs with water quality, but kind of want to get rid of the ugly box in the corner of the tank!

Arghh! which one to go for

i agree with rooster.if you were more heavily stocked,or kept bigger, messier fish like cichlids/oddballs etc, then id get another filte.but your stocking would be fine with one filter.if you do want to get another external then what about a model with an external filter built in???other wise your goung to get rid of the black box and end up with a smaller eyesore(heater)

Well couldn't resist  and eneded up getting the tetratec 700. The 1200 they do is huge!!!!

I do plan on building the fish levels up over time. I really like platies, but I try to wait for really good ones to crop up. Removing the internal has (to the eye) greatly increased the size of the tank)

Have to say I'm impressed with the tetratec (not so impressed in the 40 mins it took to gently free the old juwel). Seems well put together and managed £65 from my LFS.

I've run the heater along the bottom of the tank, so its reasonably hidden (and I couldn't stretch to a heated filter). The spaybar stops any whirlpools (will have to get one for the eheim some time). Just waiting for the tank to settle back down from all the disturbance.

Yes, the Tetratecs are fab, aren't they?. Rather tall, though; I forgot to measure the height of the cupboard under the tank. When I got home and set it up, I had 5mm to spare between the top of the taps and the top of the cupboard. PHEW!!!.
