Changing Filter Media

My tank has been cycled over 4 months back. I have been regularly changing the water and cleaning the synthetic filter media in my filter. Over time this has expanded and thinned out, due to washing. I need to replace this.

Last week I put a new filter material in the tanks filter. I put the old filter behind that new filter. How long do I need to keep the old filter media, before taking this out? How long does it take for the bacteria to move/grow on the new filter media?

id say 2-3 weeks to be safe, om not 100% on that but ive hooked up a second filter and
"fatheadminnow" said that it will take about 2 weeks for it to cycle in
