I've just bought a fluval 1 plus for my 25 litre tank that's been running for a while with a crap filter and wanted to replace it. I know I can't just swap it over cos of the bacteria, I was just wondering what the easiest way to do it would be. I heard somewhere that you can have both filters in the tank at the same time, does anyone know how long? Also would the old one need to be on while the new one was? Also I heard about cutting up the old filter media and putting it in the new filter, any good? It's just that I can see that the old filter media looks manky and the filter case is an odd shape and would probably be tricky. Any ideas / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jay.

If you can add the old media to your new filter, but if not run the new filter with the old one for a week and you'll be fine. Bacteria will be on your substrate and ornaments and plants as well as your filter. HTH.

I'm doing the same thing... sorta. I'm taking my HOB filter off and using a canister filter.

So If I keep my current filter sleeve and put it in the new filter along with the other ones i should be fine?

Yes, putting the sleeve in the new filter will work. Just rinse it first under aquarium water. HTH
