I have a 12 gallon tank and i am getting a 72"x18"x12" (LxHxW) tank and i was wondering how im going to transfer the fish over. I was thinking i could put the media into a new filter and let it run throught the new water but how long will this take before my fish can go in and what am i going to do with them why the change is taking place. Could i put them in a bucket with a powerhead and heater (overnight?) why the new tank runs?

Oh, filter wise i was thinking on of these

or

whcih would be best. Well all of this will cost quite a bit so i was thinking i could get a skimmer a few months down the line as i will only have 3 fish in it so bioload shouldn't be a problem. And i would be doing waterchanges weekly 15-20%.

thanks

You haven't mentioned what the current filtration system is or what the new tank setup will be? Are you using LR? If so all you need are powerheads. You don't need an external filter. If you can provide a little more info, then people can advise you more specifically. :)

if you have your using more liverock u owuld need to put that in the new tank and let it stay with just lr and sand in there for 3 or 4 days too make sure theres no die off, then you could just move everything over from ur old tank

I dont use LR, my tank is a FO and my bigger one is going to be FO too. I use a fluval 3 with boi rings and balls, and sponges.

Setup the new tank and fill it mostly full of warmed saltwater. Then transfer the fish to the new tank, and put the old filter on the new tank. It's just like cloning a freshwater :)

Thanks i didnt think it was that easy haha!

Thanks

You could purchase lots of ocean rock which is really cheap (probably not even £1 a kilo), then get about 5kg of LR. Eventually the bacteria in the LR will colonise the ocean rock and become "live" too. Just a thought.

Thought i would need more LR than that, Hmm because i am going to fill the tank with "reef rock' as my LFS calls it but im not sure what it is. its sort of like base rock. Its always an option. I know i will be adding a lot of macro algaes, but im always open to ideas to help along filteration, i know there is more than one way to skin a cat/ filter a marine tank. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yup, ocean rock, base rock, tufa rock... all the same stuff essentially, just a pourous rock void of any life. The addition of the LR would mainly act as a source for natural bacteria, coralline and whatever else is on/in it, to colonise the base rock. Its a far cheaper way of doing it than all LR and it means that in the future you will have a tank full of LR so if you decided to go with the Berlin system and have a reef tank, you'd have that option.

Thats true, would 5 KG be enough though? If thats enough then i could get that from the start and maybe add some more as i go on?
