Hi. My tank has been set up for getting on for 4 years. I have a piece of mopani wood in there with an anubia attached, which has been there since setup. I noticed yesterday that the top of the wood seems to have bleached. What could have caused this? I have a fish which has become ill and I wondered whether there could be some sort of bacteria that may be attacking the wood as well as the fish?

Can anybody shed any light on this? On a side note, please excuse the plants, I ran out of co2 a couple of weeks ago and am on the lookout for a new fire extinguiser. Therefore I do have a bit of algae at the moment and the plants aren't looking their best

I've had a couple of bits of mopani do that. To be honest I've never really given it all that much thought, but I can see why it's concerned you with sick fish.

I honestly can't see a connection though.

Does it look silvery in colour?
As this can just be a trapped air bubble around the wood. I have had this happen. And it shouldn't be anything to worry about. Just move your wood if possibly.

I wouldnt connect the mopani wood to it, ive had about 30lbs of it in my 180 gallon for 2 years and the only "bad" thing is that tannins still leach out and turn my water brown every week.

Oh good that's a relief. I just thought it odd that it appeared quite suddenly. I've had it in the tank for nearly 4 years sawickib and it still leaches some tannins, turns the water a bit yellow but I don't mind it, can only tell when the water's going down the plug hole at water change time!

No it's not silver Asteria just faded I'll bear that in mind though.

I can't see a connection either Dr Rob, but thought it was worth checking!
Thanks very much for your help everybody!
