I don't have one of these but I like the look of them so I would like to know what they are called and what they are like in a 3ft tank. Basically, I'd like to know some information on them.

Sorry the photo is on it's side.
The description in the book is;
This is a useful fish to have in a community tank as it spends much of it's time scavenging for waste food.
Keep in subdued light.

I only have the Latin name for it which is Pimelodella Gracilis

Any ideas?

Edit:
Just done a planet catfish search and found that it only grows to 6.7" and is in my PH range. I need to know about their behaviour to their tankmates...

I don't think the have a common name, apart form 'gracile pimelodella'! The latin name is far more useful anyway.

I googled it; not much comes up; but they come from the Amazon basin, grow to 6 or 7 inches and eat insects and worms. It's more active at dawn and dusk than during the day. I don't know for certain, but most pims prefer to be kept in groups; they can be quite nervous and skittish if on their own.

Lovely fish.

Thank you for that fluttermoth. I googled and didn't find much except planet catfish. So are they aggressive towards their tank mates? Would I be able to keep a small group in a 3ft tank? I said 4ft in the main post and I meant to change that 'cause I'm not keeping a group of these with an RTBS.

I think a 3 foot would be too small for them. Most pims aren't aggressive; obviously they'll snack on things like small tetras but they don't normaly cause any trouble. I shouldn't think there'd be problems keeping them with a RTBS tbh; although, as always, it depends on the individual fish.

I won't keep them with an RTBS in the 4ft tank because It's going to have some of the bigger fish in it. The 3ft would be my peaceful community tank in my bedroom so it wouldn't be as bright either. If 3ft is too small then that's fine, I'm sure there's plenty more catfish out there that will fit. I don't want a plec for the 3ft because I don't really like them, any ideas on what catfish, apart from cory's or plecs, that would be OK in a 3ft community tank?

I'm sure there are some; let me have a think and get back to you ;)

Any ideas? I still like the idea of having a glass catfish tank...

Do you know; I've done really badly finding catfish that are suitable for a 3 foot tank (apart from corys and plecs!) Have you thought about Otocinclus? Although they're suckermouths they don't look at all like plecs really.

The glass catfish would be lovely if your water's ok for them (soft, acidic very clean). They're certainly paeceful!

I have a PH of 6.4 so it's on the slightly acidic side. I make sure my water stays crystal clear so that's another box checked. I think I'll start researching them! How many can I keep in a 3ft tank?
I am getting some Oto's for my 6 gallon because I had one on his own that had to be re-homed because if I tried to introduce a friend or two he killed them. I would like a small group for the 6 gallon and he and his friends(when he was bought I got a group of 4, he eventually killed his friends off)never got any bigger than 1" long, even when they were in the 15 gallon tank.

Well, it depends on what else you have in there, obviously! But they are a very shy fish, so you want as large a shoal as possible really :)

Ah! Genius!

You can get 6 or 7 in your three foot, I should think :)

That sounds like a reasonable number to keep each other happy and the should be fun to watch when the have settled in.

As said its a Pimelodella Gracilis, I have one along with a Pim Blochii and Pim Pictus,

What are the full dimensions and volume of the tank? something like a small group of South American Bumblebee Catfish or possibly flagtail cats might be suitable in a larger 3ft tank.
