Carib Sea Black Sand

I am getting myself a new tank this weekend after months of searching....

I want to go for a black sand in this aquarium after having gravel in previous tank, I prefer the look of sand and Would like to have some Cory's and possible kuli's

Is this suitable for bottom dwellers as have read that its fine and others say its rather jagged and can damage the fish.

Does anyone use this without any problems? Or any alternative if it is not so good?

Can't comment on the Caribsea as I use Unipac black sand...actually looks more a very dark brown rather than black, at £25 per 25kg bag from my LFS, so, much cheaper...

The Caribsea is out of my price range as I need some 75kg of black sand for my 5', so will go for the Unipac once more. I am sure that your sand is good for bottom-dwellers as it is sold for the hobby's purpose, and is on an Aquarist website and so would surely stipulate if it is too sharp for cats, cories etc. If its not jet black, check out the Unipac locally (for the UK anyway), my bottom-dwellers are happy with it!

I use it and it's fine for bottom dwellers. I liked that it was very black in colour as compared to come of the others

Thanks for your answers, have looked at the Unipac sand which does seem fine although as you say is not completly black

I did manage to find this picture on another website which does show the carib sea black sand as rather gritty rather than sand like.

I am probably going to go to LFS today anyway to have a look and make up my mind from there on which to get.

Hmmm, I so happen to have a picture of my sand as well lol - it doesn't look like that. There is more than one type of caribsea black substrate (for example, there is a marine one..). The one you want is the "Caribsea Super Naturals Tahitian Moon" - which is what is in the pictures below.

I've got caribsea super naturals Tahitian moon as well AA
I'm using it for my yellow pingu guppy/ shrimp breeding tank. It looks very nice and I wouldn't say it's too gritty.
