Not having much luck in my project log on this question: LINKAGE

How many Cardinal Tetra's do you think I can have in the tank? I am liking the idea of a largish shoal. Tank will also have some FW shrimp in too.

80 litre tank - actually contains closer to 70 after substrate/rocks added
80 x 30 x 40cm
Filter on is Tetratec EX600 rated at 600lph

Reply here and / or in my log please if you will be so kind.

Thanks a bunch

Ben

Personally I think you could get away with few more cardinals than that. Maybe 30.

Depends on how wide your tank is. What is the width of the tank 30cm or 40cm?

I was thinking 20 was on the lean side but wasnt going to disagree!

Tank is 80cm left to right, 30cm front to back and 40cm tall

I'd start with 15 then add 15 more when it's all stable, or even 10, then 10 more a week or so later and a further 10 after say a month, as long as all is well with your water stats.

Well to be honest the tank is probably capable of supporting more than 30 cardinals even, as they aren't that big. I work it out as follows:

80cm x 30cm = 2400cm squared. This is your surface space.

I then allow 10cm squared per 1cm of fish.

2400cm / 10cm = 240cm. This is the volume in cm of fish you can stock.

Cardinals are pretty small, say at full size they will be 4cm:

240cm / 4cm = 60. This is the number of Cardinals you can theoretically stock.

So, basically your tank could support 60 cardinals. But the tank may look pretty cramped, hence the reason I suggested 30. Though you maybe able to push it to 40 after you see what 30 looks like. The shrimp don't really affect the bio-load from what I understand - so you don't need to factor them in.

Cool, thanks for the info.

I think 60 would make my new tank look a bit like a lfs though  I'll just stick 10 or so in a time until it looks right. probably won't go over 30 though.

Having looked at the tank and although I can probably house more than 20 I think 30+ will look crowded in any case. Am gonna stock to 20 and see how it goes...let the cycle begin (fish out of course)
