Hi

Just wondered how often you should change the carbon in your internal filters? As i've noticed that during a water change that my water is discoloured (yellow). Can this be bad for my fish? I change 20% of water every week.

Cheers Peeps

Every two weeks. Your yellow water may well be your lights! Your not overfeeding are you?

Graeme.

Do u have any bogwood in the tank ? this can cause the water to go yellow/brown

I only use carbon to remove medications, other than that there is no need to use it at all.

Cheers everyone i have no bogwood in my tank but i might have some in my new bigger tank (hoping to convince my parenst :D )

Just two of my filters have carbon filter cartidges in, just wondered if you change the carbon at all.

It depends on the type and grade of carbon used in the filters. So carbon embedded in pads need changing every month or so. Loose carbon that is super grade you can leave a little longer. Unfortunately like a lot of these things there is a saturation point. Then once the point is reached, it dumps the toxins back into the tank. If you do regular water tests, you'll know when to change the carbon. Ammo rocks/chips are excellent for removing ammonia and it's rechargeable too. Again once fully saturated it dumps the ammonia back into the tank. As to your yellow water, I can only assume that you have something in your tank that leaching.
