Carbon

Carbon removes many different chemicals from seawater. Carbon is a very complex issue and can remove many chemicals from chlorine, to alleopathic toxins, dyes, and more. The downside to Carbon is it's voracity for many different things. As such, it gets saturated quickly. Some people swear by it, plenty of others get by just fine.

I used to run my tank on carbon pads changing them on a regular basis after while i brought an eden pump to add activated charcoal in as well.

After a while i started to wonder why i done this and after reading many articals regarding the benfits aside from keeping the water fresh, discolouration and odour. Which should not be an issue if regular water changes are carried out.

I have not been using any form of carbon in my tank for 2years and have found no adverse effects.

Agreed. To clarify my own position, I keep carbon around only for emergencies...

thats great, thanks for your advise guys. i dont think I will add it in, Im already trying to remember everything i have learnt so far!
