i`v just got a tetratec ex 1200,i`m not using the carbon ,so my question is do i have to put something else in the carbon tray with the sponge to replace the carbon or can i just run it with the sponge

you can run it however you like
you could add more sponge more ceramic rings or even gravel

I've just bought the same filter and was thinking the same thing.

However I think I've now decided to use it once I start my tank up as I'll be adding bogwood and although I'll soak it it's still likely to leak so the carbon should do a grand job of clearing the water up.

I never thought of using gravel instead of the carbon - What a good idea, think I might opt for that...
