Carbon Pads

As i have read they are really no use unless your adding meds, i have used my to clear tannins in my water. I have had my u2 running for about 4/5 weeks. I want to get rid of the carbon filters. In a U2 what (if anything) do i change them to?

sponges or ceramic media as they allow lots of surface area for the bacteria to colonize.

so just buy another bag of media and fill the middle chamber to capacity and ditch the pads?

are the carbon inserts sponges or granular carbon?

If they're sponges just leave them in, they'll be exhausted but will still provide a good surface area for bacteria.

they're pads, what i've done is bought 2 more sponge pads and some more Biomax. Hope this works ok.
