I have had my tank running now for about 6 weeks. My filter is made up of ceramic rings, sponge and carbon cartridges. on the instructions i had it says to change the carbon every 6 weeks but i have been told i do not need it and should add more rings and sponge. Is this right or will the removal of carbon damage my system.
Thanks

you don't need carbon except to remove medications or other toxins from your water.
I have ditched the carbon from my filter and added sponge in its place, and have just kept one new carbon cartridge in case of emergencies.
I think too many people try to use carbon instead of water changes, but you are (in my opinion), better off with regular changes and no carbon.
HTH, merry.

Carbon also needs replacing every month (or less) otherwise anything its filtered/absorbed starts to leech back into the water. They are a nice cash in for the manufacturers.

Worth having one in your supply cupboard for if you have medicated your tank as they are good for removing meds.
