I'm looking to purchase a Tetratec EX700 or EX600 in the next few days. After reading on here someone advised to remove the carbon filter media, why is this and to replace it with another type of filter. What additional filter should I put in if carbon removed?

Thanks.

Carbon is only effective for a few days to a week before it is full of the sort of impurities it removes. Most everyone runs it to remove medication, as it is excellent at chemical filtration. Beyond this your water contains little if any chemicals, the most commonly found in tap water is chlorine & chloramine. These are more easily dealt with using a good water conditioner, as opening up your cannister once or twice weekly is not needed for maintenance, and is more trouble than using a good water conditioner.

Save the carbon for when you may need it, most probably for removing meds. As far as what to replace it with, that depends on the fish you are stocking, and the stocking density.

I woudn't bother putting it in the filter unless you need it. This means don't bother putting it in the filter, a cabinet or shelf is a fine place.

Understood. I was looking online at the replacement filter media and thought I'd get a spare set at the same time but don't think it needs replacing that often.

When I bought my EX700, I just took out the carbon and added a black biofilter sponge in its place. They're only £4 for two, and they'll probably last you several years.
