Carbon Changes

When adding medications etc to an aquarium, I understand that the carbon media must be removbed from the filter.

Does this carbon go to waste or is it OK to let it dry out and re-use?

Yes you can use the carbon again.

But you dont really need it in your filter.

I always beleived that you needed carbon in your filter. What is it supposed to do then if it's not really necessary?
