A full description of the fishes symptoms - My black phantom tetra was fine last night, I turned on the light this morning and she was lying on the top of the filter. She can barely swim and when she does, it's at a 45degree angle, head up and tail down. I can also see a bright red patch inside her, at the back of what I think is her stomach. (They're quite transparent fish so I can see their internal organs, the bit I'm referring to is basically to furthest back part of the organs.) I don't know if this is relevant but I think she has been overfed because when I put the food in, she is always the first of the shoal to go for it, and eats more than the others. Her stomach's been looking a little distended at the fronts for a whie but she seemed healthy.

Water parameters. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, nitrAte about 10, pH 7 as far as I can tell. I don't have an accurate test kit for pH but basically it's the same as it always has been.

How often you do water changes and how much - 20% once a week

Any chemicals and treatments you add to the water - nothing

What tank mates are in the tank - five other black phantom tetras

Tank size - 15US gallons

Finally Have you recently added any new fish? - no. Four of them were added about 3-4 weeks ago, there have been absolutely no signs of illness in any of them since then. The one that is ill has been there for 1 - 2 years.

(Edit - none of the other fish are affected in any way so I'm very confused. :/ )

I'd really appreciate any ideas no matter how vague. :-(

All i could find going by the syptoms was:

Sluggishness, lack of appetite, fin damage, reddish discoloration, bulging eyes, clamped fins = Septicemia (Treated by Antibiotic treatment in food form)

Reddening on or under skin, sudden abnormal behavior = Inflammation (Treated by OTC antibiotics)

This was all found on here

HTH

Thanks for your prompt reply Aquascaper, it sounds like she had one of those conditions. Unfortunately by the time I got home she had died. :( Although in a way I'm glad cos she looked like she was suffering.

Does anyone know if septicemia is contagious?
