Hey everybady. I'd really like some help quickly, because my wife and I have become very worried about my betta Kurosawa.

He lives in a heated 10 gallon tank with two dwarf frogs. He used to live with a snail as well.

About a week ago our snail passed away and ever since then my Betta has become lethargic and lays around constantly.
He rarely moves from the bottom of the tank.
He comes up only to eat and he willl move for bloodworms.
He loooks the same as ever, but breathing seems labored.

I've instituted several water changes.

I think he may be constapated from stealing bloodworms from the frogs, but his body is shaped normal. Is it safe to try peas if he isnt?
What else could it be.

Did you find the dead snail straight away, as if they rot away they can become toxic to fish.
What does it look like when the betta goes to the toilet.
What does his gills look like are they pale with excess mucas on them.
Being lethagic can be a sign of a bacterial infection.

Yes try the peas they are good for fish.
Cook frozen peas for a few minutes, let cool down, pop out of shell. mush between fingers into small peices, and add to the tank.

Thanks for the reply.
The peas havent seemed to help.
I havent seen him poop so he may very well be constipated.
His gils are a bit pale, but they seem to have always been so. Kind of silver I mean.... I'm not sure if I ever remember them not looking that way.
Should I give him medicine tha he eats like Jungle's "Anti-Bacteria Medicated Fish Food"? Or justcontinue with peas.

Its odd because he lays around all day suddenly, but appears to swim fine when he wants and he still has an appetite for sinking foods. Floating ones seem to bore him.
I've basically ceased feeding him in case he is constapated.

Yes you could try the medicated food if you can issolate the sick fish.

:shout:
I'm getting really frustrated.
He wont eat peas now.
He wont eat the medicated food.
His scales are turning silver.
Now there is black on his "neck"
Otherwise his bahavior hasnt changed.

Would salt baths be too stressful at this point?
I'm not sure whats going on.
I dont want to euthanize him if he has a chance.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the sail may have been dead for over 24 hours. We only noticed he died because he hadnt moved since the spot he was in the previous evening.

Is it a black patch and not black spots, as snails can cause black spots on fish.
Can you post your water stats please, in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Its a black patch. I've been checking the stats regularkry and they were all good, but the PH was somewhat high (for the snail)
I'l do some tests and post some more recent and exact figures though.

Update:
Amonia: 0
NitrIte: 0
NitrAte: 10ppm (more on this)
Current PH: 7.2

My wife has been doing the tests for me (I work a lot) aned it seems she was unaware of how hard you must shake the NitrAte test to get a good read. I did it today and it was high.
I did a water change 33% water change and dosed with Prime. Is that okay? I say 33% because I have the water level low to improve aeration and make his swim to the top easier.

Still not taking food this evening. Still looking grey. Still only moves for air.

My current theories:
Some combination of the following...
Bacterial Infection- Not sure what I can do here
Velvet - Became ill BEFORE I noticed velvet
NitrAte poisoning- Shouldnt he be hanging at the TOP and not the bottom?

If there no sign of flicking and rubbing I would go in with a bacterial med.

Whats your location.

Maracyn plus.

Maracyn plus.
Aw darn!
I went shopping before I saw your reply. I got some Triple Sulfa instead... Should I get the maracyn plus tommorrow and change treatment plans? Money is not a problem, I just want the right stuff.
