Tizer, please don't just throw that out there without qualifying it.

Qualifying it? What?

Clean it well....GOGOGO :)

My plants cope ok...some have foam/lead wrapped around the base, mainly to stop the powerhead battering them out of the substrate.

Doesn't somebody on this site suggest that it can be a good idea to give plants that go in the substrate (rather than getting attached to wood or rocks) some time to establish their roots in a new tank before adding fish?

You could give the plants that go in the substrate some time to establish their roots before you add fish.

Oh wait, too late.

Oops- too late can mean certain things added will never work out because they can not be kept in the substrate long enough to root there.

I have never used foam or foil or plant weights to keep thing anchored. I will run lower flow to avoid blowing things out before they root. Once they are secure, I turn up the flow.

I used black eco-complete. I will never look back to play sand ever again. Best thing since sliced bread! Expensive, but worth every penny in a low or hi-tech tank! Finer particles find their way to the bottom and the larger bits seem to somehow stay ontop of the finer stuff which puts a tad bit of pressure on the lowest part of the stems of the plants, therefore anchoring them. Saying that, you could always recreate that with playsand and a slightly more coarse sand/fine/ground gravel.
