I went into my LFS today and there was a betta very similar to Mariah's post today - with his top fin missing and looked in quite a bad way. :-(

I offered to take him away to treat and they said no - I then offered to buy him at regular retail price (£4 - only a veil tale but very cute) and they said no, they wouldn't guarantee he would survive long!!!!!

WOULDN'T SURVIVE LONG!!! Well he won't sat in a tank with guppies (!!!?) and swordies.

How stupid - I just know that they're going to freeze him too, they're renowned for that.

I want to perform some sort of raid and rescue the poor little guy but I know I can't. :-( :-(

How some people can be so cruel!

Offer to sign a waiver against any fish-life guarantee they might have.

Sounds like they are just confused and refusing to smarten up about it.

They wouldn't let you take him?!?!? Whats wrong with these people, you think they'd be glad to get rid of him, so they don't have to worry about selling him (because I know for a fact that most normal people (AKA not us :p LoL) would not take a betta thats missing a fin). They probably will just let him die :-( Thanks for trying though...

P.S. and sorry that I sound so mad, but the other night I was in Walmart and I saw a dead betta-its cup was filled the WHOLE way up to the top, the poor thing had sufficated! 2 other bettas were in the same situation (not dead yet, though) so I dumped some of their water out. THEY WILL BE HEARING FROM ME.

Yea, I could get so mad, I posted recently that I'd got my LFS to order in some crowntails as veil tails were the only thing they'd ever had - they got 6 and I had first choice (yay) - I chose the one I wanted (pictures on their way sometime!) and the other ones they were about to put in various tanks - one of them a betta tank and the other had a male sat in a tunnel already!!!

ARE THESE PEOPLE COMPLELY THICK?!!!!! No, most don't care - some do and it's nice to be able to have a good conversation with them!

Unfortunately this LFS is all about profit, they don't give advice on fishless cycling - you can buy your new tank and fish the same day!! :(

Don't you just love how WM has those little sinks in their department?  :hey:

I've done water changes in those before on two guys I wanted, took dechlor off the shelf and use that, then complained to the manager and asked for one of the bettas for free, and got it!

I'm not making excuses for these folks by any means..but the reason stores won't sell you already damaged merchandise is because people have burned them in the past.

Just because you sign a "waiver" doesn't really mean diddly squat...should you come in later complaining..they're pretty much obligated to resolve the problem (most times).

Sucks though..but a few rotten people have ruined that system for the honest ones...seems you have just been the victom of one of those instances.

That sucks big time! :(
My LFS will gladly either let someone take a sick fish or have them pay full price (if it's a particularly expensive fish or something) but not guarantee it. As long as they warn you that they can't guarantee it they're not responsible if it dies under your care. My LFS gets in these itty bitty frontosa fry from a local breeder and they don't guarantee those even though they're healthy just because they're usually very small... If I were you, I'd go back and ask if they'd let you take it with no guarantee.
Edit: Oh, and if they refuse, ask to talk to the manager/owner. There are a couple of ditsy employees at my LFS who don't know their heads from their arses, so it might be the same way at yours.... the owner might be glad to let you have the fish, but other employees can't be bothered to go to the trouble of asking them about it without a little persuasion
