What kind of tank are you planning to have? a full reef system or fish only?

If its a full reef system or one with liverock as the main filtration then I would use the external filter purely for mechanical and chemical filtration. Have course mechnical filter media (i.e. sponge) the finer stuff (filter floss) and then chemical at the end (phosphate remover and maybe carbon).

If its fish only with no or little LR (i.e. its the main biological filtration). Then I would have the same as above but instead of chemical media use bio rings or similar.

Hi Barney, Ben

Thanks for your replies.

Planning on having both coral and fish. I'm intending to have around 20 kilos of LR, as its a 200 litre tank. I understand that the filter is not "necessary" if your using live rock in the tank, but i just feel it will benefit the tank in the long run, and it will be "as we know" the chemical filtration.

JUST AN IDEA...COULD I HAVE:

Layer 1: fine filter?

Layer 2: Carbon?

Layer 3: phosphate?

Thanks again for your wisdom :D

If you are having live rock then thats pretty much what i would use it for.

some floss for taking out floating crap from the water collum and phos remover etc. Then just make sure you clean it well really regular
