Right, so I'm currently on my 4th generation of Balloon Molly breeding (Not my original intention but I was mis-sold some females when I was looking for males.
When the first fry popped their heads into the world I noticed that they had no problems surviving in my tank, even being along side gourami's, cichlid's and even their parents. I separated them into a hatchery anyway for good measure.

The first 2 generations were totally fine, had no problems whatsoever. But now the 3rd set seem to be cannibalistic towards the newborns, and even their larger brothers and their parents nearly 4 times the size of them. They seem to swim around in a shoal and attack together. Their behaviour is just so odd compared to the rest of them.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas why this might be happening with them. Its definitely not underfeeding as I have quite an annoying snail infestion at the moment. Waiting for a secondary tank to climatise for them at the moment so I can scrub the original tank down and remove all the snails and start afresh.

Thanks.

A mixed age colony of livebearers does typically end up at a stable population level because of cannibalization of anew generations of fry by the older ones. I have no idea what causes it but it is a fairly common happening in fish of many species.
