If you want good quality in your tank Buy 2 canister filters they cost a bit more than your normal filter but Id say worth the cost. Canisters hold more media needed to have pure water and better levels of nitrate an amonima. Only clean one filter at a time and replace half your tank water as cleaning both filters at a time will restart your tank cycle AKA (New Tank Syndrome)=Dead Fish 
. Remember to have lots of air breaking the surface of the water like constant splash. Bigger your fish are or the more you have will dirty water faster. If you have rocks buy a manual vacum hose to clean rocks wasted food is also bad for your fish. So never dump all your water or clean all your filters at same time.
