Hi,

I just acquired a 180 litre bowfront fish tank, and am looking for a good external canister filter for it. Here I am able to get the following brands: Eheim, Dymax, Fluval (Hagen) and Dolphin.

Anybody that can help me out, which brand would be best? And which model and/or capacity for this size (planted) tank?

Thanks!

imo its down to your pocket. if money is no real problem, i would go for the Eheim pro range, the bigger the better. there seems little evedence that you can over filter a tank. if money is tight Flaval or Hydor intrapet may be worth a look. I have a hydor prime 30, i cant find fault with the filter, it just the bits that fit to it that are crap. still it keeps a well stocked tank of about the same size as yours, in top nick!

Thanks! How is the noisyness of your filter? My tank is in the living room, and I don't want to be disturbed in my conversations by noise. I am not sure though whether I can get the Hydor here. I will ask around

its not too bad, the addition of a rubber mat makes it even better, and even without it, the sound in no way causes problems. in fact i regulally sleep down with the tank, having a hyper active special needs kid is a pain sometimes, and i never have any problems even at the dead of night.

Every Eheim canister I own is dead silent. I have a 2026 on a 65 gallon in my living room, you can't hear a thing.

true, my filter came with the tank, and i have no reason to change it. however if it needed to be done, i think i would go for the Eheim. taking cost into the equation though it is possible to get more filter for your money, from other makers.

Tetratec is a much cheaper range and is definately in line with the Eheim for the amateur. I have a TetraTec EX700 and its super quiet, super easy to use and super cool...my tank is never dirty ever!!

Highly recommend the Tetratec.

I am not sure though they sell Tetratec in Mexico..... Have never seen it here, nor have they mentioned it to me.

I have a eheim 2324 thermo filter for my 180 litre tank. I keep it in my living room. When I first started using it I had to keep going up to it and putting my hand onto the top to see if it was running. Its that quiet!

I went for the thermo filter because it means you have less equipment in your tank. IMHO the less equipment in a planted tank the better!

It was expensive to set up, but it was my birthday :)

Thermo has a heater in the filter and therefore you don't need to have a heater in the tank (although is best to have one in your cabinet ready as back up because as all equipment they can pack in~)

And can this heater be regulated? I currently have a nice heater, which allows me to set the degrees, which I think is perfect. I would only have to buy a bigger one for this tank.
